What is Taranaki?

Taranaki is the region on the West coast of the North Island of New Zealand, midway between Auckland and Wellington. The Taranaki region is New Zealand’s premier centre of applied and heavy engineering, home to up to 200 specialist engineering-related manufacturing, fabrication, design and support companies.

Lead by Engineering Taranaki Consortium, about 100 of these companies have grouped together to better meet client needs, under the single banner of CApENZ (Centre of Applied Engineering New Zealand). Taranaki’s engineering sector has become internationally recognised for its innovation, sophistication, and cost effectiveness. The sector has tackled some of the world's most logistically and technically challenging projects - and has completed them on time and on budget.

Taranaki is where all of New Zealand’s proven oil and gas reserves have been discovered and is one of the world's premiere dairy industry locations. Taranaki also has the only deep-water export port along New Zealand's western seaboard, the port that is also the closest to Australia.

Taranaki boasts a comprehensive service and transport infrastructure, which has been developed to meet the needs of the agricultural, dairy, engineering and oil & gas industries, and includes a heavy haul route direct to the port. Direct road and rail transport routes link Taranaki to other centres throughout New Zealand, and New Plymouth airport offers frequent daily direct airline services to Auckland and Wellington.

Taranaki also features sophisticated, non-destructive testing and inspection facilities, corrosion protection expertise, and state of the art surveying services. Through partnership with the local tertiary education institution, Western Institute of Technology at Taranaki, there is an increasing capacity locally for industry specific research and development.
